Wild Roses?

Posted by
Maria (California, United States) on 22 May 2011 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

I used a macro lens this time, and I experimented with different settings...
but I probably sprayed too much water on the flowers :))
Anyone knows the name of this variety of roses?
Their smell is incredible, and for some time I thought they are Rugosa Roses, but now I searched to make sure, and I don't think they are.
Still I think they are wild, even if living in my backyard...

klausz from Austria

wow, an extraordinary clarity and fantastic details! spring as it should be, wonderful!

22 May 2012 5:45am

@klausz: f/32 is responsible for the clarity...I think...and maybe the use of the tripod, as well, which normally I don't.. Thanks Klaus! I miss seeing your art...

Japanalia from Yokohama, Japan

I almost want to touch them! They seem to be happy where they are and they bring a happy smile to all who look at this photo! (Yes, the tripod!!!! But so heavy, so encumbering!)

22 May 2012 9:21am

@Japanalia: thanks Gabriela... yes, the tripod it's a pain to carry around, though I have a light one especially for hikers, and works well for days without much wind... This shot, however, I took at home, so not much to carry...

Yair Karelic from Ramat Gan, Israel

Very lovely flowers, do you grow them in your backyard or they grow wild?
you got very good result with your macro lens, you should teach me how to use it since I never get such good results with it.

22 May 2012 10:29am

@Yair Karelic: they live in my backyard, but I water them regularly, just like any other flower that I have...so to me they are not wild at all, even if they may be a wild specie...and they are among my most favorites due to their amazing smell. I will teach you, of course...just that my experience it's equal to zero, and what I would teach you would probably be very wrong, but if you don't mind learning things the wrongest possible way, no problem! :)

Don Levesque from Saint John, Canada

Beautiful photo! Sharp colours and details!
As for the species, I think they are Rosa Californica [LINK]

22 May 2012 3:29pm

@Don Levesque: thanks Don,... I see that Rosa Californica looks very similar to what I thought they were, Rosa Rugosa, and while my roses look similar to both of these species, I'm not sure it's any of them. Both Rosa Californica and Rugosa seem to have one layer of petals, while mine has 2 layers of petals with 2 extra smaller petals in the center that usually curl inwards. I did more searching and I found another specie named Theano that seems to be what I have... I think... :))

Roman from Thiersee, Austria

isn't f/32 a bit unusual for a macro shot?
but the result is unbelievable!
stunning claritiy but great soft background also - a masterpiece Maria!

22 May 2012 3:43pm

@Roman: not only it's unusual, but probably it is also the most weird setting one could use..possibly unique to me only! :)) Well, I was experimenting, and each time I try a new thing, whatever that thing it is, I first try the extremities...so I can get an idea of the most and least of everything... I first tried f/2.8, the max (or min, if you wish) of my lens, and I was not too happy with the result...at least not for this particular subject ... Thanks Roman...

franz from Baden, Austria

what a gorgeous flower portrait, maria! there can never be enough droplets on the petals, if you ask me!
my first reaction was 'rosa rugosa', too, and i still think it could be one from that family, but perhaps don is right ... it looks like a californian rose, too!

22 May 2012 8:02pm

@franz: thanks Franz...yes, I agree too, never too many droplets of water... I did more research on the specie and I think it's actually Rosa Theano, which is a mix of Rugosa with some other specie

Judy aka L@dybug from Brooksville, FL, United States

This is another gorgeous image ... and not too much water in my opinion. Your f/32 and tripod worked the magic for you. I didn't know of Rosa Californica, but it very well may be that.

superb macro work - the level of detail and sharpness is incredible! water drops look just great! at f/32 and 5 seconds the flowers must have been absolutely still and your focus spot on to achieve such depth of field!
