Matterhorn & Riffelsee, Valais Canton, Switzerland

Posted by
Maria (California, United States) on 1 November 2011 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

I wish there was no wind (for a clear reflection), and I wish there was no cloud sticking to MY mountain.....but since both, wind and cloud, existed, I have no other option for a better photo, but visit there again! :))
Very simple! :)))

Thank you ALL for your visit and comments.

well Maria, don't be annoyed with the clouds.
I've seen so many shots of the Matterhorn with a clear blue sky and a plane Riffelsee, that your picture here is something very special.
The cloud adds some mystery to the peak as well as the blurred reflection.
I like it very much.

@Roman: Thanks Roman...you convinced me!

Oh, Maria...those are the elements that make the image...can't you see!! Or are you just testing us!!
The last time I saw the Matterhorn, it was completely clouded over...such a superb image. 5stars. :OD

19 Oct 2011 11:25am

@janina: Thanks Janina... I guess I'm just looking for reasons to return for a second visit :)

Eric Cousineau from Sherwood Park, Canada

A wonderfully complex and layered shot Maria! You have captured the best elements at each level for a stunning picture! Definitely 5-stars!!! Bravo! ;-)

I've seen a few photos of the Matterhorn before and most of them had no clouds and blue skies. It's really nice to see them as they really are, clouds and all.
As for the blurred reflection, it's a refreshing new look at this wonderful landscape. Well done Maria!

Judy aka L@dybug from Brooksville, FL, United States

I love the elements of the grasses in the foreground, the reflection in the middle and 'MY' mountain in the background. ;D
I guess it will have to be a mountain we share. *grin ... Here is a link to my shot from a helicopter in 1998.

19 Oct 2011 12:33pm

@Judy aka L@dybug: No sharing, sorry! :)) Thanks Judy!

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

Why worry, it looks as natural as possible and you can still say it's yours!
Love the flow of the composition especially using those reeds as the starting point.

19 Oct 2011 2:08pm

@Curly: Well, thanks Curly....I appreciate it

Francisco Romero from Carbajal de la Legua, Spain

I would agree with your first wish and I wouldn't with the second one. In fact, your image shows better the version of a wild imposing place than the manicured one. Your image is an outstanding one.

indeed, nothing to worry about, maria! this is as perfect as it can get ... what would mountains be without clouds and wind?!? the view is great, the details are great (esp the grass in the water!!!), the frame is spectacular ... but of course you're welcome to come back any time for even better photos ... ;-))

19 Oct 2011 3:35pm

@franz: I think you understood well my main reason why I'm not happy with the photo :)) Thanks Franz

klausZ from Kufstein, Austria

hi maria, again a very special and soooooooo appealing photo, yeah, i understand your disappointment about the weather, but especially in the mountains, clouds are so often companions and make photos very unique! clouds round the peak of the matterhorn are not so unusual i think, and "underlines" the power and energy in this area, which is only felt, when accepting the efforts to go up there! fantastic view and capture, especialle this very "flat" view over this little lake with all this gleaming grass! 5*****

I hope that next time you visit there there won't be wind or disturbing clouds. still, I like this picture and it's nice even without a mirror like reflection

20 Oct 2011 11:53am

@Yair Karelic: Thanks Yair... I hope so too.... I'm glad you like it even if the reflection is not all that great.... Maybe next time you can join, I heard you plan a visit to this area!

Jason Kravitz from Brussels, United States

breathtaking - that grass caught my eye as well - I kind of like the transparency in the foreground and then reflection in the middle (even without the winds cooperation) - as for the big sticky cloud I think it is charismatic and gives this scene a unique element

20 Oct 2011 7:05pm

@Jason Kravitz: Well, thank you Jason :)

Don Smith from California, United States

Beautiful image Maria. I love the painterly feel and look of the foreground grasses - it serves to lead the eye up and through the image.

Of course you can go even without an excuse...just because you want to. Next time you go you might not be as lucky with the weather. Be happy with this wonderful shot.... just in case. I have found that the second time visiting a place does not hold the magic that the first time did.

john4jack from Corvallis, Oregon, United States

gorgeous. exquisite foreground

24 Oct 2011 8:52pm

Sandy Weston from Maine, United States

Maria....was this a flooded area? The reason I ask is because of all the grass in the water, that you find around the shoreline.....amazing, wonderful shot...beautiful work!!

27 Oct 2011 12:12am

Japanalia from Yokohama, Japan

Of course the eyes fall first on those plants in the water and the "belly dance" they do...absolutely fascinating!
Personally, I like ripples on the water and clouds in the sky, they give an image character! Your mountain here looks charming with the cloud kissing its top!

30 Oct 2011 6:45am

Steven Schwartzman from Austin, Texas, United States

I can relate to the way you speak of "MY mountain." When I'm photographing places I've sometimes also described them like that. Now you've made me wonder how many photographers personalize scenes in that way.
